What the Egyptian Consulate in London asks for
The Consulate General of Egypt in London publishes its own legalisation rules. We read them, with GOV.UK, the FCDO's diplomatic list and the Hague Conference status table, on 11 October 2026; confirm with the consulate before you send documents.

The consulate, not the embassy
Egypt is not a party to the Apostille Convention (it is not in the Hague Conference status table, last updated 30 June 2026), so UK documents also need Egypt's own legalisation in London. The FCDO's London Diplomatic List for October 2026 places visas and legalisations with the Consulate General at 2 Lowndes Street, London SW1X 9ET, not with the embassy in South Street.

FCDO apostille first, then the consulate
The consulate legalises documents issued by UK bodies once the FCDO has apostilled them, provided they comply with Egyptian law. Employment and experience letters must first be notarised by a notary public whose notarisation expressly confirms the document is genuine; a plain 'certified copy of original' is not accepted. To legalise a translation or a copy, both the original and the copy need an FCDO apostille, and a bundle of notarised documents is apostilled and legalised one document at a time.

Educational certificates and enrolment letters from UK schools, colleges and universities are legalised only once the Egyptian Cultural Office in London has certified them. The consulate warns that replies from schools can take a while, so allow for this extra step.

Postal applications go to the Legalisation Section with the FCDO apostille already on each document, the exact fee in postal orders payable to The Egyptian Consulate General (cheques are not accepted) and a stamped self-addressed return envelope, sent by registered or recorded delivery. A marriage or divorce contract issued by an Islamic centre can only be legalised when one party is Egyptian and that party comes in person.
