How the Iraqi Embassy in London attests UK documents

Based on the attestation page of the Embassy of the Republic of Iraq in London (published in Arabic), GOV.UK, the FCDO's diplomatic list and the Hague Conference status table, read on 11 October 2026. Ask the consular section to confirm before you send anything.

  • No apostille route for Iraq

Iraq does not appear in the Hague Conference status table for the Apostille Convention (last updated 30 June 2026). GOV.UK's route for countries outside the Convention is the FCDO Legalisation Office, then the country's embassy in London, then approval by its Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The FCDO's London Diplomatic List gives the embassy's consular section as 3 Elvaston Place, London SW7 5QH.

  • Everyday documents

The consular section attests public documents once the British Foreign Office has authenticated them, and asks for a copy of your passport with every document you hand in.

  • School and university certificates

Educational certificates need two authentications before the consular section attests them: one from the FCDO and one from the Iraqi Cultural Attaché in London.

  • Powers of attorney

For a personal power of attorney drawn up by a UK law firm, the person giving it must attend, with photographs of that person and of the attorney fixed to the document and the passport number recorded. A power of attorney made before a UK notary to withdraw money or to buy or sell can only be attested when the person concerned attends in person.

  • Commercial documents

Commercial documents are attested after the FCDO and the Arab and British chambers of commerce have authenticated them. Certificates of origin and their invoices are the exception: only the Iraqi Commercial Attaché in London attests those.
