Three ways to type Arabic
Arabic layout
Your keyboard works like a standard Arabic (101) keyboard, the layout printed on Arabic keyboards. Hold Shift to add vowel marks such as fatha, damma and kasra, and hamza forms such as أ, إ and آ.
Phonetic
Write Arabic the way it sounds, using English letters. Type salam and you get سلام. Numbers stand for Arabic sounds: 2 for ء, 3 for ع, 5 for خ, 6 for ط, 7 for ح, 8 for ق and 9 for ص. Click a suggestion, or press Space to accept the first one.
Normal typing
Your keyboard types as usual, and you click the Arabic letters on screen. Handy on a shared computer or when you only need a few Arabic words in an English text.
Phonetic typing chart
What to type in Phonetic mode for each Arabic letter. Numbers cover the sounds that have no English letter.
- aa → ا ee / ii / ei / ai → ي oo / uu / ou → و Double a vowel to write it as a letter: aa gives ا, ee or ii gives ي, oo or uu gives و. A single vowel inside a word is left out, as in everyday Arabic writing, and the word suggestions add the right letters. A vowel at the end of a word is always written.
- a / o / u → أ e / i → إ aa → آ A word that starts with a vowel begins with an alef, for example ana becomes أنا.
- al / el / il → ال Start a word with al for the article ال, for example alkitab becomes الكتاب.
- p → ة Type p at the end of a word to get ة (ta marbuta).
- Y → ى Type Y at the end of a word to get ى (alef maqsura).

How do I type Arabic without an Arabic keyboard?
Use this page. Choose Arabic layout and your normal keyboard types Arabic letters in the standard Arabic positions, or choose Phonetic and write the words as they sound in English letters, for example salam for سلام. You can also click the letters on screen. When you are done, press Copy and paste the text anywhere.
How do I add the Arabic keyboard on Windows, Mac, iPhone or Android?
Windows 11: Settings > Time & language > Language & region, choose Add a language and add Arabic, then switch layouts with the Windows key + Space. Mac: Apple menu > System Settings > Keyboard > Text Input > Edit, click +, search for Arabic and click Add, then switch with Control + Space. iPhone: Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards > Add New Keyboard > Arabic, then touch and hold the globe key while typing to switch. Android (Gboard): tap a text box, tap Settings at the top of the keyboard, then Languages > Add keyboard and pick Arabic; touch and hold the space bar to switch.
How do I type harakat (Arabic vowel marks)?
Type the letter first, then add the mark. In Arabic layout mode, and on a standard Arabic (101) keyboard, hold Shift: Shift + Q gives fatha, Shift + E damma, Shift + A kasra, Shift + X sukun and Shift + ` (the key left of 1) shadda. Shift + W, R and S give the tanween forms. You can also click the marks on screen. The Remove vowel marks button strips them all out again.
What do the numbers 3 and 7 mean in Arabic chat (Arabizi)?
When people write Arabic in English letters, numbers stand for sounds that English lacks. 3 is ع (ain) and 7 is ح (haa), chosen because they look like the letters. Other common ones are 2 for ء (hamza), 5 for خ, 6 for ط and 9 for ص. Usage varies by region: 8 is used for ق in some countries and for غ in Lebanon. In our Phonetic mode, 8 types ق.
Can I type Persian (Farsi) and Urdu letters?
Yes. The extra letters row adds the four Persian letters پ, چ, ژ and گ, plus Urdu letters such as ٹ, ڈ, ڑ, ں, ے and ھ. Click them to add them to your text in any mode.
Is my text private?
Yes. Everything happens in your browser. Your text is saved on your own device so a page refresh does not lose it, and it is never sent to Lingo Service or anyone else. Press Clear to remove it.
